Baby Shower and Other Similar Traditions

Baby shower is a gathering or party, held by a woman who is going to have a baby. At first, a mother to-be usually throw this kind of party, for her first child but as the tradition changes, parents now think that they should showered all their children. In that occasion, future parent will receive gifts from their guests. The gifts are all the things that a newborn baby needs. Usually parent makes all list that they’ll be needing, so that guest knows what to give and can avoid unnecessary gifts and duplicate gifts.

This baby shower is usually attended by women only, relatives and friends, but nowadays fathers, men can come too. In this event, as they gathered, they chit and chat, they eat, in this case they serve some finger foods, fresh fruits, and the most thing that everybody waited for, is the baby shower cakes. The baby shower cake matches with the theme they’re having, with the decoration, and invitation. A unique idea for the drink is they’re serving some light drinks like punches, soda, tea, and coffee with baby bottles, by changing the nipples with straws. Then they’re going to play some games that are simple but joyful to play like bottle races, baby bingo, how many baby items can you name, etc. The winner usually gets little gifts just for fun. Then the final thing they do is, giving the baby shower gifts. Some years ago, the tradition was making their own gifts but nowadays they just give what newborn baby needs, like baby furniture, baby clothes, baby bottles, baby diaper, etc. At the end of the party, guest brings home party favors which the parent-to-be already prepare as a symbol of thanks and grateful for their coming.

This tradition, baby shower, however originally from USA, but globally followed by other countries in Europe, Africa, and even Asia. In Indonesia, there is a tradition also held by parent who is expecting baby, called Nuju Bulanan, it means 7^th months because this tradition is held on the 7^th months pregnancy. In India, the tradition is mostly the same, held on the 7^th months of pregnancy, only women attend this gathering, but due to the western influence men attend this gathering too. The Baby shower in Jewish tradition also has this kind of gathering, but the difference is they held it after the baby born.
